Marianne Bourgoz Gorgé and Alain Girard to join FINMA’s Executive Board

The Board of Directors of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA has appointed Marianne Bourgoz Gorgé and Alain Girard as new members of the Executive Board. Marianne Bourgoz Gorgé will take up the role of Head of the Asset Management division on 1 September 2022. Alain Girard will take over leadership of the Recovery and Resolution division on 1 August 2022. FINMA’s Executive Board is thus once again complete following the departures of Jan Blöchliger and Rupert Schaefer.

FINMA’s Board of Directors has appointed Marianne Bourgoz Gorgé as a member of the Executive Board. The 48-year-old mathematician will lead the Asset Management division from 1 September 2022. Marianne Bourgoz Gorgé has over 20 years of experience in the banking sector, where she has held various managerial roles. Most recently, she was Group Chief Risk Officer at Banque Cantonale de Genève for eight years (until 2021). FINMA’s CEO, Urban Angehrn, is pleased about the appointment: “In Marianne Bourgoz Gorgé we are gaining an experienced risk manager who is familiar with all aspects of banking operations – ranging from credit through to asset management – from her own practical experience and who is very experienced in dealing with internal and external stakeholders.”

Marianne Bourgoz Gorgé will take over leadership of the Asset Management division from Philip Hinsen, who had held this role on an interim basis following Thomas Hirschi’s appointment as Head of the Banks division (see press release). Philip Hinsen will return to his position as Head of the “Authorisation” section.

Alain Girard is new Head of Recovery and Resolution division

Alain Girard will assume leadership of the Recovery and Resolution division on 1 August 2022. He succeeds Rupert Schaefer, who will assume the role of Executive Directive of the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority BaFin in Germany on 1 November 2022 (see press release). Alain Girard (1981) holds a doctorate in law as well as a degree in economics. He is currently Head of Supervision of Small Banks and Securities Firms at FINMA. Previously he worked in the Recovery and Resolution division.

FINMA’s CEO, Urban Angehrn, says: “A combination of subject-specific knowledge and leadership skills are required to successfully lead the Recovery and Resolution division, particularly in crisis situations. Alain Girard brings both of these qualities with him. I am delighted that we have been able to find an internal successor for this very challenging role.”

FINMA’s Executive Board will thus be constituted as follows with effect from 1 September 2022:

  • Urban Angehrn, CEO
  • Birgit Rutishauser, Deputy CEO, Head of Insurance division
  • Léonard Bôle, Head of Markets division
  • Marianne Bourgoz Gorgé, Head of Asset Management division
  • Patric Eymann, Head of Enforcement division
  • Alain Girard, Head of Recovery and Resolution division
  • Thomas Hirschi, Head of Banks division
  • Alexandra Karg, Head of Operations division
  • Johanna Preisig, Head of Strategic Services division
