An overview of the insurance sector

All supervised insurers are required to submit information and data to FINMA on the previous year’s business trends. FINMA then draws up an overview of the industry which it includes in its annual report on the insurance market.

The report on the insurance market is published once a year and contains general information on the market in Switzerland; it also sets out balance sheet and profit and loss data for the industry as a whole.

The figures for the individual lines of business show the trends in premiums, market shares of major companies active on the Swiss market and the development of equity and net annual earnings. For life insurance, the report also covers actuarial and technical results.

Reports for the years prior to 2008 are available from FINMA on request.

Operating statement of occupational pension schemes

As of the 2019 annual survey, the report for the first time contains details of the operating statement of occupational pension schemes and thereby replaces the transparency report on occupational pension schemes published in previous years. The entire set of raw data from the operating statement of occupational pension schemes previously contained in the transparency report continues to be published in the “Details of the operating statement of occupational pension schemes”.

Electronic data tables for the insurance market
FINMA publishes electronic tables providing a deeper insight into insurers’ data on its insurers’ reporting portal. The underlying raw data can be obtained there.
