Swiss insurance sector continues to strengthen its resilience

The 2025 insurance market report, published today by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA, shows that the Swiss insurance sector is in a strong financial position overall. Insurance companies significantly increased their equity and continued to maintain a high level of solvency. At the same time, the sector achieved a significantly higher aggregate annual result than in the previous year.

Swiss insurance companies achieved aggregate annual profits of CHF 24.4 billion in 2025. This meant that the result was CHF 14 billion or 136% higher than the previous year’s figure. Annual profits rose particularly sharply for non-life insurers, to CHF 12.9 billion, and for reinsurers, to CHF 9.8 billion. Life insurers, too, increased their aggregate annual profits by 10.2% to CHF 1.7 billion.

Investments in particular contributed to the higher results. The profits from investments increased by 47.6% to CHF 24.8 billion in the year under review. The return on investments rose from 3.37% in the previous year to 5.00%.

Total premium volume remains largely stable

Aggregate gross premium volume fell slightly by 0.6% to CHF 149 billion in 2025. The trend varied across the different sectors: Life insurers increased their gross premiums written by 3.7%, while non-life insurers increased theirs by 2.8%. Gross premiums for reinsurers fell by 6.1%. This decline was largely due to the appreciation of the Swiss franc against the US dollar, the euro and the British pound.

Full report and detailed data on the internet

FINMA publishes an annual report on the Swiss insurance market, which contains general market information as well as sector-specific data on the balance sheet and income statement. The sector-specific figures show the development of premiums, the market shares of the largest insurance companies in Switzerland and the development of the insurers’ equity capital and annual results. In the area of life insurance, the report also contains information on the actuarial reserves and the operating statement for occupational pension schemes. The report now also includes information on untied insurance intermediation.

As a supplement to the insurance market report, FINMA publishes electronic tables in the insurers’ reporting portal, which provide detailed information for each insurance company as well as in aggregated form.
