Simon Brönnimann to assume leadership of FINMA’s Recovery and Resolution division

The Board of Directors of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA has appointed Simon Brönnimann as Head of the Recovery and Resolution division and as a member of the Executive Board. He will assume leadership of the division, which he has been leading on an interim basis since April 2026, on a permanent basis from 1 June 2026.

FINMA’s Board of Directors has appointed Simon Brönnimann as Head of the Recovery and Resolution division and as a member of the Executive Board following an internal and external search. Simon Brönnimann will take up his new post on 1 June 2026, having already been leading the division on an interim basis since April this year. He succeeds Alain Girard, who took over as Head of the Banks division on 1 April 2026 (press release).

Simon Brönnimann, aged 44, has been at FINMA since 2007, most recently as Interim Head of the Recovery and Resolution division and, prior to that, for seven months as Interim Head of the Banks division. From 2024 to 2025, Simon Brönnimann was responsible for the Supervision of Small Banks and Securities Firms section within FINMA. From 2015 to 2023, he headed the Supervision of UBS and the CS Group as well as the follow-up work in the wake of the Credit Suisse crisis. In previous years, he held various positions in banking supervision at FINMA and its predecessor organisation. Simon Brönnimann began his career with a banking apprenticeship and went on to work in the lending department of a Swiss regional bank. He holds a master’s degree in Economics and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Commenting on the appointment, FINMA CEO Stefan Walter says: “In Simon Brönimann, we have been able to fill the key role of Head of Recovery and Resolution with a highly qualified member of our own management team who brings with him profound expertise and extensive practical experience. Thanks to his in-depth knowledge of the financial sector and his excellent working relationship with national authorities and international supervisors, Simon Brönnimann is particularly well placed to successfully drive the long-term development of the division.”
