FINMA Executive Board: Thomas Hirschi to leave FINMA

Thomas Hirschi has decided to leave the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA effective 31 August 2025. The Head of the Banks division will pursue a new career outside FINMA. FINMA’s Board of Directors and Executive Board thank Thomas Hirschi for his valuable contribution during his time at FINMA.

Thomas Hirschi headed FINMA’s Asset Management division as a member of the Executive Board from 2020 before assuming responsibility for the Banks division in February 2022. Thomas Hirschi previously held various managerial roles at FINMA and its predecessor authority from 2004 to 2015. From 1 October 2023 to 31 March 2024, he was also interim Deputy CEO (Cf. CV and photo).

Thomas Hirschi’s time as a member of the Executive Board included major challenges. As Head of the Asset Management division, Thomas Hirschi was responsible, among other things, for laying the foundations for the successful processing of licence applications from portfolio managers. As Head of the Banks division, he and his team monitored the significant changes in the economic and geopolitical environment and their impact on banks. He was also heavily involved in dealing with the CS crisis and the follow-up work.

CEO Stefan Walter says: “On behalf of the entire Executive Board, I would like to thank Thomas Hirschi for his enormous commitment during his five years as Head of Banking Supervision and the Asset Management division at FINMA. He was a valued member of the Executive Board and overcame major challenges during this time, making a significant contribution to the stability of the financial centre. We very much regret his decision to leave FINMA and wish him every success in the future.”

Chair of the Board of Directors, Marlene Amstad, adds: “On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to offer my sincerest thanks to Thomas Hirschi for his many years of valuable work. His contribution to managing the CS crisis and his time as interim Deputy CEO are particularly worthy of mention. I wish him the very best for the future.”

Thomas Hirschi will step down from his role as division head on 31 August 2025.
